Introduction on gaming disorder, digital addiction and related conditions

The talk provides an overview of different syndromes related to gaming disorder, digital addiction and related conditions - within the context of international classification systems. Their risk factors, underlying drivers, related comorbidities, individual's characteristics/vulnerabilities and social determinants are described, along with strategies for assessment and treatments. Other complications, including education failures, social withdrawal, aggression, violence and online radicalisation are also considered. The implications of these factors to roles and services provided by the FSH Gaming Disorder Clinic are also described.

Professor of Youth Mental Health and Developmental Neuropsychiatry, Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) , WA; Consultant Psychiatrist, Gaming Disorder Clinic, FSH; Psychiatry Discipline Lead, Curtin Medical School, Curtin University, WA; Professor, the enAble Institute, Curtin University, WA. His honorary positions include: Adjunct Professor at Graduate School of Education, University of Western Australia, and Adjunct Professor, Psychology Department, Murdoch University.

Professor Chen is a qualified child, adolescent and youth psychiatrist of over 25 years clinical and research experience. He was trained at the Maudsley Hospital and the Institute of Psychiatry, London; and specialised in neurodevelopmental disorders under Professor Sir Michael Rutter, Professor Eric Taylor and Professor Philip Asherson.

His research is in the areas of ADHD, neurodevelopmental disorders, emotional dysregulation, their treatments, dissociation, resilience and social recovery in children, adolescents and youths. He has been awarded over AUD$3m successful grants awarded in collaboration with different research groups. His MPhil thesis, completed at Cambridge University, was published as a chapter by Cambridge University Press. Professor Chen has also contributed a chapter on Child Neuropsychiatry in the Oxford Textbook of Neuropsychiatry, published by Oxford University Press. In 2010, he was jointly awarded the BMA Medical Book Awards: 'Highly Commended' - Digital and online resources - for "Living with ADHD". He served between 2011-2013 as an external peer reviewer for the DSM5 Clinical and Public Health Committee (DSM5 CPHC) during the DSM5 revision. In 2022, one of his research publications has been cited by DSM-5-TR to inform the text revision (TR) in the ADHD section.

Prof Chen has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and has given over 50 national and international conference presentations. In Google Scholar, he has over 9,000 citations, h-index of 47, and i10-index of 81.

Dr Daniela Vecchio, MD, FRANZCP, MHA, MPH
Dr Daniela Vecchio is head of mental health and addiction services in Fiona Stanley Hospital. She is the pioneer in establishing, in 2022, the first publicly funded gaming disorder clinic in Australia.

She has seen increasing numbers of young people with addiction to video games and social media and was quick to recognise the distress and harms caused to them and their families.

The clinic is unique, worldwide, in providing early detection and intervention
in an acute hospital setting.

She has driven the development of holistic assessments and a wide range of personalised treatments for her clients.

She has fostered extensive collaborations, internationally with Korea, Germany and Dubai, nationally with experts in the field and locally with health, education and police services.

As a director of the Australian Gaming and Screens Alliance she is promoting education and research into harmful online use and influencing national policy.

She is the 2026 WA Australian of the Year Award
